Det finns ett par teman i Lyotards ”Time today” som påminner om Baudrillards tidigare arbeten Symbolic Exchange and Death och Simulacra och Simulation.

Jag tänker dels på teknikdeterminismen – det gemensamma imperativet är att tänka samtiden/framtiden utifrån tanken att datorn förändrar allt – men även på Borgesvurmen. Baudrillards ”desert of the real” är en referens till Borges – och Lyotards ”Time today” pekar mot ”The library of Babel”. Den kompletta monaden som framträder alltmer är som nämnda bibliotek.

I förordet till Penguins utgåva av Labyrinths fann jag följande beskrivning av Borges, som jag känner sympati med:

Attracted by metaphysics, but accepting no system as true, Borges makes out of all of them a game for the mind. He discovers two tendencies in himself: ’one to esteem religious and philosophical ideas for their aesthetic value, and even for what is magical or marvellous in their content. That is perhaps the indication of an essential scepticism. The other is to suppose in advance that the quantity of fables or metaphors of which man’s imagination is capable is limited, but that this small number of inventions can be everything to everyone.’
